Every one of the Bible's 31,103 verses, and the verses tied to it. This is where a passage from anywhere else on the site opens out into the rest of scripture.
A cross-reference is one kind of context, not the only kind. The first kind is what sits immediately around a verse — its own sentences and argument. A cross-reference points instead at a passage elsewhere that uses similar language or takes up the same idea. Neither replaces the other, and the counts here measure only the second.
Two verses count as connected if a reference is recorded between them in either direction. Duplicates collapse.

Ranked by how many distinct verses each one is tied to. Not by how many links it carries — a verse can be joined to the same target several times, and counting that way would inflate the busiest passages further.
FIG. 12 connections per verse · 30,304 verses
The shape is heavily skewed. Most verses sit well below the average, and a small number carry connections into the hundreds. That is why the site quotes a median of 16 rather than the mean of 19.9 — the mean is pulled upward by the long tail on the right.
799 verses appear nowhere at all and are absent from this chart entirely. They are counted on the method page.
