Genesis, Exodus, John and Revelation each reach across scripture in a different shape. Pick a book and read its profile left to right, in the order the Bible runs.
Counts include every link touching the book, excluding references it makes to itself.
Cross references are often recorded in only one direction. One verse may point to another verse, even though the relationship between the two passages works both ways.
For these visuals, those references are consolidated in both directions. A connection is counted whether it was originally recorded from the first book to the second or from the second book back to the first.
This gives a complete picture of the connections between the books without treating the direction of the original reference as meaningful.

FIG. 08 four books across the canon
Genesis front-loads. Tall bars through the law and the early histories, one tower at Psalms, then a long decline that never reaches zero. It is the ground everything later stands on.
Exodus makes a ridge across the first five books and drops away after. Its nearest relatives are its own neighbors, sharing the same legal and wilderness material rather than borrowing it.
John runs almost flat through the Old Testament, then breaks upward at Matthew, Mark and Luke. That cliff is four accounts of the same events.
Revelation inverts Genesis. Quiet through law and history, it climbs at Isaiah and stays high across the prophets, drawing from the visionary end of scripture.
The profiles above measure each book against the whole canon. Set the four against only each other and six pairs remain. Raw counts and counts per verse do not agree about which is strongest.
| Pair | Links | Verses | Per verse |
|---|---|---|---|
| John – Revelation | 968 | 1,283 | 0.75 |
| Genesis – Exodus | 1,498 | 2,746 | 0.55 |
| Exodus – Revelation | 548 | 1,617 | 0.34 |
| Genesis – John | 610 | 2,412 | 0.25 |
| Exodus – John | 468 | 2,092 | 0.22 |
| Genesis – Revelation | 382 | 1,937 | 0.20 |
Genesis and Exodus carry the most links of any pair here, and the two of them are also the longest. Divide by length and John and Revelation move ahead: 1,283 verses between them hold nearly as many links as the 2,746 verses of Genesis and Exodus. The four cross-testament pairs all sit lower, with Exodus and Revelation clearly ahead of the other three.
Every figure here counts links between the two books named, in both directions, and excludes each book’s references to itself.
A blank cell is a book compared with itself. Zero means no link appears in the source data at all.
| Book | Genesis | Exodus | John | Revelation |

Two things worth knowing before leaning on a number. Links pointing to a range of verses are counted once, at the first verse, so a reference to a whole chapter weighs the same as one to a single line. And confidence scores are ignored here — a link with three votes counts exactly as much as one with a hundred and forty-seven.
A book's own internal cross-references are excluded throughout.
