The four pillars across scripture

Genesis, Exodus, John and Revelation are the pillars the Arc of the Covenant builds the gospel on: creation and promise, deliverance and law, the Word made flesh, the consummation. Choose one to see every book it reaches, and click an arc to read the verses.

Cross references are often recorded in only one direction. One verse may point to another verse, even though the relationship between the two passages works both ways.

For these visuals, those references are consolidated in both directions. A connection is counted whether it was originally recorded from the first book to the second or from the second book back to the first.

This gives a complete picture of the connections between the books without treating the direction of the original reference as meaningful.

What the arcs show

Height means distance, not strength. A tall arc crosses most of the canon; a low one joins near neighbors. Strength is carried by thickness and darkness instead, so a thick low arc — Exodus to Leviticus, say — matters more than a thin tall one.

Genesis throws a wide fan rightward, thickening at Psalms and Isaiah and reaching all the way to the final book. Exodus keeps its weight close to home, with a knot of heavy short arcs among the books of the law.

John produces the densest cluster on the page, packed into the gospels, where three parallel accounts generate thousands of links across a few inches of canon. Revelation reaches almost entirely leftward and lands hardest on the prophets.

Choose all four at once to see them compete for the same space. Psalms and Isaiah pull arcs from every color, which is the clearest picture of why those two books dominate every count.

Where the numbers come from

Each arc counts entries that link passages which quote, echo or parallel one another.

Verse lists are sorted by community vote, so the most widely recognized connections come first. Links pointing at a range of verses are counted once, at the first verse. A book's internal references to itself are excluded.

Every reference opens on this site, at that verse and its own connections. Nothing on this page needs an internet connection.
